Injustice??
I usually write in this blog about upcoming events and things that are happening in the community of Melaque. I try to stay neutral about my opinions. But with the way things are going I have to say something.
I am tired of what is happening. This all started with a Canadian man being murdered in Melaque. The whole town, surrounding areas, the state, all of Mexico, all of Canada, all of North America was justfully horrified and angry. So what happens?? People start opening their eyes to a problem that is plaguing our town, the lack of security and corruption of the police. So everybody, Canadians, and Mexicans go and make an up-rise to the officials in charge and demand change and an arrest for those who are to blame for the death of Robin Wood. So the police do what they have always done. They find two punk kids and “get” them to confess, mind you the real killer has left town and is gone. Everyone knows who he is and no one says boo. But now at least there are two faces to show on the news and calm the fears of Canadians wanting to travel to Mexico. The two faces of these 18 year old boys say what?? They say the police of Mexico get justice for those coming to visit. JUSTICE???? INJUSTICE!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this what the families of the Victim really want?? Is everyone ok with this?? We all just go on our marry lives?? REALLY??
Well it seems so! Because now there is a girl that has become a victim, a girl named Dalila Morales Castro. She is a local girl whose family comes from humble beginnings but thanks to the help of kind family friends she goes to university and has been known to work hard and help the community by volunteering. Basically she is someone who was going in a positive direction in life. Well now she is missing. Foul play is most likely the scenario. A Suspect is clearly been identified with a face and a name. Has he been found?? NO!! Has Melaque been clearly upset and asking for justice for this girl?? YES!! Has it gone further than the area?? NOT REALLY?? Some comments here and there on other social forums!! Has it been on the news?? NO. Let alone on the Canadian news.
So what is the difference??? Whose life is worth more?? Why is Robin Wood’s tragic death more important than the disappearance of Dalila?? Is it because he is Canadian and she is Mexican?? They both have friends and family that miss them very much, they both have been a productive part of society, they both where kind-hearted people who mad people smile. So why do we put some people on the back burner?? This, my friends is INJUSTICE and something has to change.

ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly with Arianna's comments. Violence is rampant in all parts of the world and we need to acknowledge that the problems that are now plaguing the Melaque area are not being treated with respect. The outrage at Robin's death and the resulting media coverage that came out of that was grossly overplayed by the media in Canada and the U.S.
ReplyDeleteCertainly it is a tragedy whenever something of this nature takes place. The loss of a tourist is no more important than this loss to folk here. Melaque has one for sure and possibly two of their own who have disappeared.
Dalila's disappearance has been reported on Tomzap and a few posters have gone up but that is not nearly enough. The local community is looking for her and hopefully all the law enforcement is looking to solve this but media attention has not been on the case.
It is really quite offensive to me as a Canadian to have people here think that we do not care. As foreigners we care deeply but are unable to adequately voice our concerns or make an impact on the search.
There is very little talk among the tourist population about their disappearance. We tend to hide our head in the sand and pretend that all is right with the world.
Melaque is quickly becoming an unsafe place for us to be. If we want to save our piece of paradise and be welcomed here by the local population in the coming years we need to start to take an interest in and acknowledge the ills that are part of life here.
The outlying towns and areas inland that were so badly hit by the hurricane do not have the ability to recover after disaster that beach towns like Melaque do. Melaque's tourists give them an advantage not shared by inland communities. It is for this reason that crime is becoming more prevalent. When one section of the population has an advantage over another there will always be problems.

ReplyDeleteIf someone dies of cancer, it doesn't get into the news, but if they died of a highly infectious disease, it does. It's not about the level of tragedy for the family and friends, or the level of risk, since the reality is we are much more likely to die of cancer than flesh-eating disease. But humans are almost hard-wired to react strongly to new and unexpected threats, and to try to preserve themselves and their family.
The issue of scapegoating innocent people is a different one, many expats have commented that they want the real criminals arrested, not innocent scapegoats. But how can they intervene?
Im am happy to say that you can do something. bring ideas to the table, get together and make suggestions that have worked from where your from, organize a neighbourhood watch with people you know that live around you, get to know your neighbours, Mexican, Canadian and American. If something doesn't look right or someone is doing something wrong, speak up and have a plan of action so you know where to go for help.
